A prime suspect who was arrested on Monday in Canje, Berbice, has since confessed to being part of a gang which robbed a Canefield, East Canje, Berbice business and a Bloomfield Village, Corentyne family recently.
Three men on Saturday evening pounced on Indra Grocery and Beer Garden, located in Canefield, East Canje, and robbed the owners and about 22 customers of a quantity of jewellery, millions in cash and a number of cellphones. The men also stole a customer’s car, which they used to escape. The car was later found in New Amsterdam.
Additionally, last Thursday, a Bloomfield, Corentyne woman was pushed off of a shed during a robbery by four armed bandits. The bandits stole $60,000 in cash, a pair of gold earrings and three gold rings from the Bloomfield woman.
According to a police source, the suspect in their custody was arrested with a firearm in his possession and has since disclosed to investigators the name of the mastermind behind the robberies, who is said to also hail from Canje.
The source said the suspect has since claimed that the mastermind identifies the targets, then alerts “his friends” from Georgetown, who come to the ancient county to carry out the attacks.
Additionally, the source noted that the suspect has also relayed that the stolen items have since been taken to Georgetown, while the monies stolen were divided among the gang.
The police source yesterday said that they are on the hunt for the mastermind, who they are hoping will lead them to the other perpetrators responsible for the robberies.
