A Sophia resident was on Tuesday evening shot by the police after he allegedly escaped while being transported to a police station lockups.
He had been taken into custody for robbing two trainee nurses along Main Street.
The 27-year-old man, whose identity remains unknown, was shot once in his abdomen.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remains a patient under police guard. His condition is listed as stable.
The police in a press release yesterday said that the suspect was apprehended by members of the public on Tuesday evening and handed over to law enforcement officers after he allegedly robbed two trainee nurses on Main Street, Georgetown.
Whist being transported to the Diamond/Grove, East Bank Demerara lockups, the police said that man fled from the force vehicle on High Street.
“…And after a period of pursuit, was shot by one of the armed escorts,” the statement noted.
Investigations are ongoing.
