Heavyweights Eagles and Net-Rockers will battle for the inaugural Linden Town Week Mayor’s Cup Football Championship, following semi-final wins on Wednesday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden.
Eagles clawed their way past Capital FC 3-1. Donovan Francis handed Eagles the lead in the 16th minute, lashing onto a rebound following an initial attempt, thumping his effort into the back of the net from inside the box.
Capital FC recorded the equaliser in the 32nd minute as Dequan Hercules scored. The skillful attacker curled a perfectly placed free-kick into the top corner from outside the penalty box, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The score would remain unchanged heading into halftime.
However, Colwyn Drakes would decide the outcome with two goals in the space of one minute in the dying moments of the clash.
The wily attacker grabbed his first in the 86th minute to hand Eagles the lead, cutting in from the right side, before rifling a powerful flat strike into the far corner from inside the area.
His second was amassed moments later and was almost identical to his first, as he raced into the penalty area and blasted a flat strike into the far corner.
Meanwhile, Net-Rockers downed Winners Connection 4-3 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 1-1. Prior to the penalty shoot-out, Winners Connection took the lead in the 32nd minute, as Shaquille Frank scored.
Frank made his presence felt, racing past the centre-half pairing, before finishing past the goalkeeper following a one-on-one situation.
However, the lead would be short-lived, as Shane Luckie scored four minutes onward. It was a moment of brilliance from the lanky attacker, who uncorked a powerful free-kick, which nestled into the bottom corner of the net.
The grand final will be hosted on April 23rd at the same venue with the losers facing off in the earlier third place playoff. Prior to the third-place playoff, there will be a match between the National U17 and the Upper Demerara Football Association U20.
