Guyana’s swimming contingent on Friday last departed these shores for Barbados to participate in the 2019 Carifta Aquatic Championships which started yesterday and ends Tuesday.
The team comprises six of the country’s top dippers including Leon Seaton Jr., Raekwon Noel and Nathan Jackson who are returning to the championships along with Aleka Persaud, Patrice Mahaica and Paul Mahaica who are set to make their debuts at the event.
The talented bunch will be coached by Haresh Bhagwan with Jaime Skeete as his assistant.
Bhagwan, in an invited comment, told Stabroek Sports that the swimmers should make the finals of every event Guyana would have entered for.
“Based on entries, we are in a position to be in the final for every event each individual swimmer would have entered for.
“As it relates to coming back with medals, all six athletes have the potential to medal but at this moment, we can confirm that four out of the six can finish in the top three,” he disclosed.
Bhagwan said that Persaud, who is an Olympic hopeful, is in line to secure four individual medals based on her entry times while Seaton another Olympic hopeful could possibly swim away with gold in his signature event, the 50M freestyle. The event will also be used as a PanAm and World Championships qualifier.
