Trevor Benn, who led ‘F’ Division to their maiden Police Commissioner’s Inter-Division T20 title over the weekend believes that cricket in the force is on the rise and there is talent among the ranks.
After defeating President Guards (who had won the tournament for the last two years) by a seven-wicket margin, Benn told Stabroek Sport that “Cricket is on the rise in the Guyana Police Force and in the various divisions. It shows that hard work always brings success, we continue to be dedicated with whatever we do.”
The successful captain pointed out some of the outstanding players within the team including Quintin Sampson, who, in his debut tournament, managed the most sixes (22) of the season, a record for the competition’s history.
He also singled out Lennox Andrews who stroked four half centuries to finish as the tournament’s leading run scorer with 245 runs and Leon Crawford who was adjudged the best wicket-keeper.
“Quintin Sampson is an exceptional cricketer. I just told him to go out there and back yourself and he brought it home for the team,” said Benn of Sampson, whose unbeaten 65 from just 23 balls earned him the Man-of-the-Final trophy.
Benn, an Inspector, added that there is also diversity in the force in the pointing to Raul Haynes, who, he declared is a capable footballer and not really a cricketer.
Benn praised the organisers for a well-run tournament and gave kudos to the groundsmen for preparing a wicket that gave both batsmen and bowlers something to work with.
The pitch produced four 200-plus totals in the tournament.
Benn said he hopes to see more improvement come next year with ‘F’ Division coming hard to defend their title.
