The 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games will be staged in Guyana in 2021. The historic news was disclosed to Stabroek Sport yesterday by President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson.
“We would have won the confidence of the CARIFTA Committee and the 50th edition of CARIFTA will be in Guyana in 2021,” said Hutson.
He added:“I am so proud of my athletes and coaches. It’s the performance of our athletes that earned this for us. I am so filled with emotion that I was reduced to tears when I got the news from the NACAC President, Mr. Victor Lopez.”
The news comes on the heels of Guyana’s 21-member contingent earning a record 10 medals (four gold) at the 48th edition of the Games which concluded last night in the Cayman Islands.
It will be the first time the 592 will play host to the Games since its inception in 1972.
Hosting of the largest age group Track and Field spectacle in the Caribbean will no doubt be a challenge for first timers, Guyana.
Hutson is up for the challenge.
“This will be the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games and it’s our plan to make this the most spectacular of all the Games ever. The preparations must start now. This is not just about hosting, it’s about preparing our athletes to be competitive in each event. We must put on a great show for our local fans and the world to see.”
He added “The tourism industry must be adequately prepared for this. We have put together a good marketing strategy to have all stakeholders on board where it will be mutually beneficial to all.”
The countdown for CARIFTAGUYANA2021 starts now.
