Record haul for CARIFTA athletes

Gold medal efforts by Claudrice McKoy, Chantoba Bright, Anisha Gibbons and  Matthew Gordon highlighted Team Guyana’s performance at the CARIFTA Games which saw the local outfit earning a record 10 medals, four of them gold.

The brilliance of the quartet and others enabled Guyana’s 21-member team to depart from the Cayman Islands with the largest medal haul ever from the 48th edition of the annual Games which was staged during the Easter weekend.

From the spikes of  McKoy, Guyana first struck gold at the Games for the 592.

The 19 year-old freshman at Monroe College, finished atop the podium in the women’s U-20 1500m event winning in 4:39.36 on Saturday. 

She led Jamaican duo Kelly-Ann Beckford (4:40.49) and Aneisha Lawrence (4:41.19) onto the podium.

Bright, the best female junior jumper in the Region, won the women’s U-20 long jump on Day 1 with a leap of 6.05m then followed that up on Sunday by disturbing the sand for a silver medal performance in the triple jump.

Gibbons threw 40.34m in the women’s U-17 javelin to earn the gold while Gordon recorded a time of  9:12.43 in the 3000m men’s U-17 to stand atop the podium.
