A man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with being one of the two bandits who disguised themselves in wigs and school uniforms and robbed a New Amsterdam businessman of his car and millions in local and foreign currency.
Christopher Rampersaud, 40, who is originally from Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, but gave his address as 110 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the March 16th attack.
It was alleged that Rampersaud, while in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Robin Busgith of a Toyota car, valued $1 million, $3.7 million in local currency, US$1,500 and a cellphone.
Rampersaud, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was remanded to prison. He is to return to court for another hearing sometime next month.
Busgith and his wife were robbed by two armed men dressed in wigs and Berbice Educational Institute uniforms while they were returning home from the New Amsterdam Market. The couple operate a stall and engage in currency exchange at the market.
The bandits demanded that they hand over the bag along with the key to their car. The bandits then used the car to escape. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Stanleytown, New Amsterdam.
