A probe has been launched into the activities of prisoners at the Lusignan Prison after a video of a fight between two prisoners that was staged to mimic a dog fight, surfaced on social media.
Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels yesterday confirmed the fight took place, which seemed to be a form of entertainment for inmates.
In a statement he said, “A video done in the Holding Bay at Lusignan was just brought to my attention. Immediately, an investigation commenced and it was ascertained thus far, that the video was done on Easter Monday.”
The “ring leader” of the fight he explained, has since been separated from his fellow inmates and a Board of Inquiry is being convened to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.
The video, seen by this newspaper, shows two inmates tied around the neck with what appears to be a section of a torn t-shirt and held like leashes by two other inmates.
The video shows inmates forming a circular barrier with the two fighting inmates in the middle. They were heard chanting “Fight! Fight! Fight!” and “Bad dog”. Sometime after, the two inmates engaged in the fight.
Inmates at this point, cheered the opponents as they fought each other.
This is not the first time a video of the prisoners’ activities at the prison surfaced on social media. Inmates in March, posted a video brandishing improvised weapons.
“They were found to be improvised weapons made of the fence material and from a pot cover. One cellular phone that was used to record the video, was also retrieved,” Samuels said in his statement on the discovery of the weapons.
