A push cart operator was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with robbing a man who refused his request for a cigarette.
Michael White, 48, of 177 Triumph Village, East Coast Demerara, stood in the courtroom of Georgetown Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read the charge to him.
It is alleged that the accused on April 22nd, at Commerce Street, while armed with a knife, robbed Jiram Seetram of an $8,000 BLU phone and $3,000.
A not guilty plea was entered by the accused.
Police prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to the accused being granted bail. According to the prosecutor, at about 10.15 am, Seetram was sitting on the northern side of Commerce Street when White walked up to him and asked him for a cigarette.
The prosecutor said that the complainant denied the accused’s request and was subsequently punched and fell to the ground. White then pulled out a knife and removed the items mentioned in the charge.
White was denied bail and the proceedings were adjourned until May 15th.
