Tabebuia pentaphylla commonly called Pink Poui is native to South America.
Pink Poui trees are planted throughout the Caribbean and South America to provide shade on sidewalks and avenues.
Pink Poui are in bloom all week. Clusters of pink trumpet-like flowers can be seen on these trees and when they fall to the ground, they form a carpet, which is an amazing sight to behold.
Poui trees can be seen on Brickdam opposite the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Croal Street, Irving Street and in the Demerara Mutual insurance company compound at Avenue of the Republic. However, these trees are badly in need of trimming and shaping.
A new set of Poui trees was planted by a women’s group a few years ago and they are progressing nicely.
Some people are mistaking our Pink Poui for Apple Blossom and are calling for me to identify these trees and provide the correct name.
Our trees in the city remain in poor shape after being brutally chopped. Now is the time to do corrective surgery on them and identify them properly. Generations to come will thank you.
Let us as a nation come together and save our trees. We need to also plant more trees to replace the ones we have lost.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
