A Chinese national was yesterday granted bail after he was charged with attempting to murder a customer, who has now become a wheelchair user as a result of injuries he allegedly sustained at his hands.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the attempted murder charge to Xinoxi Qu, 28, of 1B Diamond Public Road.
The charge against Qu stated that on April 22nd, at Diamond Public Road, he wounded Gregory Sanmoogan with the intent to murder him.
Qu, a manager at Fresco Supermarket, was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
An application for bail was later made by his attorney.
Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield later made no objection to the attorney’s request, but requested that conditions be applied.
According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, at about 8.30 pm, Sanmoogan went to Fresco Supermarket and purchased a few items. Subsequent to purchasing the items, Sanmoogan left and went to the Diamond Public Road, where the accused is alleged to have approached him from behind and hit him on his head and then dealt him several cuffs and kicks about his body. After the attack, the prosecutor noted, Sanmoogan went to file a report at the Golden Grove Police Station, where he collapsed while doing so. Sanmoogan was then rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted a patient and released some days later.
The prosecutor told the court that the complainant was unable to make his way into the courtroom because he was now using a wheelchair.
The Chief Magistrate subsequently granted the accused $400,000 bail and ordered that he report every Friday at 8 am to the subordinate officer-in-charge of the Golden Grove Police Station. Qu was also ordered to lodge his passport with the clerk of courts at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The matter was then adjourned until May 17th.
