A Port Mourant, Corentyne man succumbed at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital yesterday after he was allegedly beaten at his house during the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Dead is Vadeanand Sukhra, 56, of Lot 21 Port Mourant, Corentyne.
According to his daughter-in-law, Roshanie Shaw, Sukhra and her father, Fredrick Shaw, 55, were both at the house when it is alleged that a man turned up and assaulted them.
Roshanie said Sukhra sustained injuries to his head, while her father sustained injuries to his jaw and neck.
She explained that around 6.30 am yesterday, someone informed her that Sukhra was injured. “When we go over, he lay down a ground and blood running out he mouth and we just take him to Port Mourant Hospital,” she recounted.
She said Sukhra, who was unconscious, was immediately transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he succumbed yesterday afternoon.
She said her father told her that he was awakened around 2 am, when he heard a man asking Sukhra “Is who lay down on the bench?” According to her, Sukhra informed the person that it was her father and the man kicked and punched him and then attacked her father.
According to the senior Shaw, who was discharged from the Port Mourant Hospital yesterday afternoon, after being beaten Sukhra ventured into the kitchen of the house. At that point, he said, he did not know that Sukhra was badly injured. He did not make the realisation until later in the morning, when Sukhra was discovered bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Roshanie noted that her father said although he does not know the intruder, he would be able to recognise him.
Meanwhile, the woman also expressed her dissatisfaction with the treatment she received from ranks at the Whim Police Station. She explained while relatives rushed her father and father-in-law to the hospital, she and her mother-in-law ventured to the station to file a report. “When we go, them take a short report on a lil piece paper and telling us my father got to go to the station. So I tell them my father rush to the hospital. Them say let he come!” the woman noted.
She added that she could not understand why the police did not show much interest in the matter. “I thought they would have investigate and come to the hospital with me or something but I don’t know, they didn’t say anything else,” she said.
