Marlon Rodney, the taxi driver who was shot during a misunderstanding last week Thursday at the corner of D’Urban Street and Mandela Avenue, in Georgetown, has succumbed to his injuries.
A relative of Rodney yesterday informed Stabroek News that he died around 4 pm on Tuesday while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
She explained that Rodney was shot four times to his left leg. He underwent emergency surgery after which he never regained consciousness.
The shooting occurred around 9.45 am on Thursday during which a passer-by, Shaquille Dion, 24, of D’Urban Street, Lodge, was also injured.
Dion was shot once to his back and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and then discharged.
An autopsy yesterday showed that Rodney died as a result of multiple injuries sustained to his left leg.
The police had said that stringent efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects, who were identified by the aliases “Dabo” and “Curl Up.”
Investigations, the police said, revealed that Rodney and “Dabo” had a misunderstanding, after which the former left. Shortly after, Rodney returned and he, “Dabo” and “Curl up” continued to argue. Both “Dabo and Curl Up,” who were said to have been brandishing handguns, allegedly discharged their weapons at Rodney, who was struck in the left leg, the police added.
Dion, who was passing by in the vicinity at the time, was struck by a stray bullet.
Rodney’s relative, who wished not to be named, told Stabroek News yesterday that it remains unclear what might have led to the misunderstanding between Rodney and the suspects.
