The fourth edition of the Independence Track and Field Classic returns to the National Track and Field Centre next weekend with lucrative cash prizes on offer.
These and other details were disclosed yesterday at the National Resource Centre during the formal launch of the event.
According to President of the Guyana Overseas Based Sports Association, David Thomas, this year’s staging is gearing up to be the best one yet. Thomas said that aside from the lucrative cash prizes and trophies, the event will create a platform for standout academic and athletic students to be rewarded.
“All Guyanese athletes showing great potential in various sports and academically will be given a plaque and a certificate,” said Thomas.
He then encouraged all student athletes from the 10 Regions to register and be a part of the exciting two-day spectacle.
President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson thanked Thomas for the overseas association’s continued show of support for the local athletes then disclosed that the fixture will cater for athletes eight and under to Master 35 and over.
Coordinator of the event, Sheryl Hermonstine disclosed that athletes are scheduled to get in the blocks from 10:00hrs on both days (May 18 and 19) and admission cost is listed at $300.
Hermonstine then thanked and listed, Banks DIH Ltd, the National Sports Commission, Sybil’s, Forrester Lumber Yard, the Guyana Committee of Service and GUYBISCO as some sponsors of the fixture.
Meanwhile, Director of Sport, Chris Jones and Vice Chairman of the Guyana Committee of Service, Linden Jones both stated that they were pleased to be associated with the fixture and encouraged patrons to support the event.
Following the launch, Thomas presented Hutson with a computer to help with the AAG’s recording of stats.
