One of the men suspected to have been involved in the murder of taxi driver Marlon Rodney, was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the offence.
James Fraser, called “Damo,” denied the allegation, which stated that on April 30, at Norton Street, Georgetown, he murdered Marlon Seon Rodney, called George.
The charge was read by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
On the day in question, according to Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, following an argument with Shaquille Dion, called ‘Radica,’ Rodney left to go home and as he was walking along Norton Street, heading in the eastern direction, he noticed Fraser, 21, along with another person, exiting a white car.
He added that Rodney called out disrespectfully to Fraser’s accomplice, who then pulled out a gun from his waist and discharged several rounds at Rodney, hitting him on his left leg. Fraser’s accomplice continued firing his weapon at Rodney.
Attorney George Thomas, who represented Fraser, told the court that he was surprised that his client was charged with the offence, as Fraser was not in possession of a gun at the time of the murder. He also said that after hearing the gunshots, Fraser instinctively ran away but came back to assist Rodney and took him to the hospital. He then gave statements regarding the murder to the police.
It was previously reported that Rodney succumbed to injuries while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was a patient in the Intensive Care Unit.
Rodney was reportedly shot four times in his left leg and never regained consciousness after he underwent surgery.
Dion, who was close by, was also shot once in his back, but was discharged.
