A 19-year-old accused of stealing a cellphone, was yesterday granted bail by a city court, after he denied being the perpetrator of the robbery.
Denzil Benjamin appeared before the Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was accused of robbing Savindra Ramraj of a cellphone valued $120,000, on May 6, at Robb and King Streets.
Facts of the matter related that Ramraj was in company of Savita Singh, who had the phone at the time of the robbery. The two were exiting a vehicle when Benjamin approached Singh, snatched the phone and ran away in a southerly direction. It was reported that the accused was arrested after being identified.
When asked of his occupation, he told the court he was jobless. Asked the reason this was so, he responded by saying, “I am gay and they don’t really give us jobs”.
The young man also mentioned to the court that he has been charged before with similar offences.
The accused was granted bail at a sum of $50,000 and the matter adjourned until May 20, 2019.
