A farmer was yesterday remanded to prison, after he was charged with the March murder of a Leguan youth.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, read the murder charge to Philip Jhagroo, called ‘Tanky’, 46, of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara.
It is alleged that between March 30 and March 31, at School Dam, Richmond Hill, Leguan, the accused murdered Mark Narine, called ‘Marko’.
Jhagroo was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
According to prosecutor Stacey Gittens, on the day in question, Narine was on his way home, when he was lashed off his motorbike by the defendant and thrown overboard. She said that Narine was found the next day in a trench at Leguan.
Having heard from the prosecutor, the accused was remanded to prison and the matter adjourned until May 30, when it will be heard at the Leguan Magistrate’s Court.
An autopsy performed on 22-year-old Narine, a labourer of Endeavour, Leguan, Essequibo River, gave his cause of death as drowning. The autopsy also revealed that Narine was severely beaten, as evidenced by the blunt trauma to his face and hands.
