Junior national squash champion Shomari Wiltshire began the 2019 Woodpecker Products Junior National Squash tournament with an overpowering win over Gianni Carpenter last evening at the Georgetown Club Squash Court.
Wiltshire, who is the reigning boys under-17 and 19 champion, looked in imperious form as he accounted for his counterpart winning 11-1, 11-3, 11-1, only dropping five points in the boys under -17 and 19 combined match.
The most competitive match of the evening saw Samuel Inch-Carvalhal and Michael Alphonso battling it out with the former emerging as the victor in the end.
It was Alphonso who drew first blood, winning the 11-8 before Inch-Carvalhal evened matters by taking the second 11-4. He then rode his momentum and secured the third set 12-10 to complete the 3-1 come-from-behind win by taking the fourth 11-3.
Nicholas Verwey was again impressive, coasting to his second win of the tournament in as many days after defeating Demetrius DeAbreu 11-5, 11-3, 11-4.
Mohryan Baksh, on the other hand, continued his impressive showing by clinching two additional wins in the tournament by defeating Joshua Verwey 11-0, 11-0, 11-3 and Dhiren Persaud 11-1, 11-0, 11-0 in their boys under-13 encounter.
Louis DaSilva also backed up his first-round win by getting pass Shiloh Asregado 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 in the boys under – 13 category.
The under-11 category saw Christian Fernandes getting her way with Tiana Gomes 11-2, 11-5, 11-4 while Shriyah Persaud defeated Maya Dean 3-0.
Chad DeAbreu was also in the winner’s row after winning his duel against Matthew Spooner 11-2, 11-2, 11-4.
