Businessman admits to killing wife

Businessman Ryan Sugrim has confessed to killing his wife, Zaila Sugrim, whose decomposed body was found in a shallow grave next door to his La Union, West Coast Demerara property on Tuesday afternoon, days after she was reported missing.

Off-spinner Matthew Nandu yesterday produced a stellar bowling performance to spin the national Under-17 select side to a 42-run win over Essequibo in the second round of the Hand-in-Hand under – 19 Inter-County one-day tournament at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground.

In less than three days, all roads will lead to the Mackenzie Market Tarmac, as a new champion will be crowned in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets Linden Championship, when first time finalists High Rollers and Amazings battle for the title.  The youthful High Rollers unit secured a place in the grand finale, after overcoming titlist and traditional giant Silver Bullets in the semi-final round compliments of a 1-0 penalty shoot-out scoreline.  This was the second of two unexpected victories for High Rollers on the night, as they bested a formidable Swag Entertainment side 2-1 in the earlier quarterfinal section.

Dear Editor, Now that seven Members of Parliament—-three  PPP/C and four  APNU+AFC Coalition (excluding Charrandass Persaud) —-have voluntarily resigned due to the High Court and the Court of Appeal rulings on dual citizens being prohibited from sitting as parliamentarians, one wonders if there are others.

Region indebted to Maurice Bishop for recognition as `Zone of Peace’  

Dear Editor In this 40th anniversary year of the 1979 Grenada Revolution, the fates smiled upon our Caribbean Community (CARICOM) when it was confirmed  that the 22nd Regular Meeting of CARICOM’s Council For Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) would  be held in Grenada on the 13th and 14th of May 2019, thereby ensuring that the assembled Caribbean Foreign Ministers would find themselves in a space steeped in the spirit of Maurice Bishop — the great hero and martyr of the Grenada Revolution — and would therefore be impelled to take cognisance of Bishop’s signal contribution to the edifice of CARICOM’s collective Foreign Policy — the notion that  our Caribbean region should be legally constituted in International Law and universally respected as a “Zone of Peace”!   It would do us well to recall that a mere seven months after Maurice Bishop’s People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) came to power in March 1979, Grenada attended the 9th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) at La Paz in Bolivia, and secured the adoption by the OAS of Resolution 456 (1X-0/79) decreeing the Caribbean a “Zone of Peace”.  Thus, in the operative part of the 1979 Resolution that Grenada successfully piloted through the OAS, the General Assembly of the OAS (inclusive of the governments of the United States of America and Canada) resolved as follows:- “ 1.

Thirty years ago, the member states of the United Nations agreed to a binding treaty of international law that would allow all children in all countries and of all ethnicities, cultures and orientations to live in a world in which their human rights would be respected and adhered to.
