President David Granger yesterday accepted Letters of Credence from Marichu Mauro, accrediting her as the new non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Guyana.
At a simple ceremony held at the Ministry of the Presidency, he reminded that the two countries have founded their relations on the bases of mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of regional peace and security.
He said that both countries share a common interest in the peaceful settlement of disputes and in ensuring respect for settled territorial and maritime boundaries.
Further the president expressed gratitude to the professionals from the Philippines who have brought expertise in fields including education, forestry and health and he signaled his anticipation of improving cooperation with the Philippines, particularly in the fields of agriculture, commerce, environment, fisheries and marine development.
Mauro for her part noted that trade relations between the two countries have been “minimal” but her country is hopefully that economic relations particularly in the area of investments can be improved.
