President David Granger yesterday said that he has asked Attorney General Basil Williams SC to respond to the allegations made in an unsigned letter, which has been circulating in the public domain.
“He hasn’t done so in writing but I have seen a copy of it. It is anonymous and you have to be very careful with anonymous letters,” Granger told reporters following an event at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Based on his response, the president seems skeptical about the contents of the letter particularly given that it has no name to it.
“If somebody had evidence they would put their name to it and be prepared to defend it…but if it is a fake letter …anybody can write anything but I have seen it. I have asked him if there is any truth in it,” he added.
The seven-page letter which was leaked to members of the media last week has no date but is headlined “Request for an investigation into the Management of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the conduct of the Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General.”
It begins by naming 19 members of staff who have left the AG’s Chambers since Williams took over the helm. It then make series of allegations against Williams.
In a response made on his Facebook page, hours after the letter began circulating, Williams pointed fingers at the opposition PPP.
“It’s clear that the criminous PPPC has been severely hurt by my assertion of the correct history of their recent 23 years in government. Massive corruption, extra judicial Killings, dictatorship of the Judiciary, narco state, corrupt ministers and other officials all resulting in a failed state,a pariah state. They have decided to retaliate. How ? By a cowardly unsigned letter!,” he wrote.
“Now why if you’re speaking the truth would you be afraid to affix your name to your allegations? It’s quite simple you have a lot more to hide which you know Basil would surely reveal,” he added.
He described the contents of the letters as “fake” and said that he rejected it.
“…efforts have been made to bear false witness against me in the hope that they can resume the purloining of government assets if I’m removed. It’s pathetic that the call is not for investigation for corruption, bribery, kickbacks or conflict of interests but for employees seeking refuge in flight,” he added.
Chief Parliamentary Counsel Charles Fung-a-Fatt, SC has since denied ever being abused by the AG.
