Most Valuable Player at the just concluded Hand In Hand Under-19 Inter-County tournament, Junior Sinclair has set his sights on breaking into the West Indies youth team for the Under-19 World Cup as well as the Guyana Cricket Academy.
With four players from Guyana among West Indies Under-19 selectees, namely, Sachin Singh, Kevlon Anderson, Kelvin Umroa and Ashmead Nedd, Sinclair has proven himself capable of joining the ranks with exceptional performances in the tournament.
Sinclair finished the season with the most runs for any batsman, tallying 374 runs at an average of 41.56, with four half centuries. He also took 11 wickets with his off-spin along with three catches and one stumping when in the field.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport at the end of the tournament, Sinclair said he will be using this tournament as a stepping stone for the upcoming Regional Under-19 tournament where he will stake his claim for a spot in the West Indies Under-19.
“The immediate goal for me with the upcoming regional tournament is to challenge for a spot in the West Indies Under-19, there is still space in the team for the World Cup and I think I can break in. I’m looking forward to getting the most runs and staking my claim for that spot,” Sinclair told Stabroek Sport.
Also, Sinclair has set his mark on becoming the newest member of the local cricketing academy, having done enough to justify his selection with his recent performances.
“I think this is a stepping stone for me going into the senior level and I am positive this motivates me to break in the senior level because I know it will be tougher…I think with my performance this year, I think I should stand a good chance of making it into the academy,” he said. Sinclair is a versatile utility player, opening the batting while also being capable of batting down the order.
With the ball he is a wicket-taking option who bowls at an economy rate of 2.36. Additionally he is a more than competent wicket keeper.
Of his wicket-keeping Sinclair said: “It began at the club level, I was just helping out the situation with the manager calling upon me be a wicket-keeper and others seeing the skillset in me, but my choice is to bowl.”
