An 18-year-old Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara girl died after she was struck by a car, after allegedly jumping from her husband’s vehicle on Wednesday night.
Police are investigating the death of Kareema Mary Cholmondeley, of Lot 10 BB GEC Scheme, Hugh Ghanie Park, Cummings Lodge, who was run over on the Turkeyen Railway Embankment Road around 10:30 pm.
Police say that the woman’s 42-year-old reputed husband, related to the investigators that he and Cholmondeley were having an argument before she threw herself onto the roadway, just before the accident occurred.
The driver of the other car, PJJ 5884, which was proceeding west along the southern side of the road, said that he saw a male pushing a bicycle on the same side of the road, and as he was about to pass him, observed someone lying on the roadway. However, because of the short distance, he stated that his vehicle ran over the body.
Cholmondeley was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both the husband and the driver are in police custody assisting with the investigation.
It was related that the driver successfully passed a breathalyser test.
When Stabroek News visited Cholmondeley’s residence yesterday afternoon, no one was at home. Neighbours related that the woman was living alone with her reputed husband, previously her landlord.
Once known to be a “sweet and quiet” young woman, one of her immediate neighbours, whose daughter she was close friends with, related that one night the woman launched a spontaneous verbal attack on her and even attacked her car. They related that she had been acting in an erratic manner since the beginning of the year.
Another neighbour related that they noticed a stark change in her behaviour, which was confirmed from the constant arguments she would have with residents.
Despite the young lady living in the area for more than three years, neighbours were unfamiliar with her family and the circumstances between her and her reputed husband.
