President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Horace Burrowes has refused to give clarity as it relates to the hosting of elections for the body despite the term ending.
The GCF has been heavily criticized by a number of stakeholders including cyclists for its administration of the sport since Burrowes assumed office in 2015.
Interestingly, the four-year term of those executives would have expired with elections slated “no later than March.”
Burrowes, speaking on Wednesday at a press conference in the chambers of the National Sports Commission with Director of Sport, Christopher Jones and Secretary of the GCF, Maria Leung present, made it clear that he is of the opinion that “now is not the right time for those conversation” but related that it would be dealt with at a later time, however he was expected to leave the country that same night since he is based in the United States of America.
“the elections of the GCF is coming up, but I don’t think that is relevant at this time and I think we will speak on this a different time…the discussion could happen over the phone, when I return…I wouldn’t be hard to find,” he said.
The GCF President indicated that he will be back and forth in the country as they prepare to host the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships in August but could not give a definitive answer when asked by Stabroek Sport if there will be discussions on elections before or after the championships.
Burrowes argued that he acts as the International Cycling Union (UCI) sees fit or mandates
“I will say again the Guyana Cycling Federation is in very good standing with the UCI and the UCI is the world body and they control the federation or every international federation and I do as UCI say and I go as our Constitution says and if UCI says to do certain things then I am doing as UCI say so I am actually going to say I don’t think it is relevant for us to speak on that anymore in terms of the elections,” Burrowes said.
Jones, when asked on the way this situation is treated by the National Sports Commission said that the NSC awaits the results of the GCF’s internal mechanisms and only when indicated of their election dates, then only if support is needed then the NSC will lend such.
Jones stated that so far no correspondence on elections of the GCF has been issued and stressed that they cannot just intervene into the body’s affairs.
