The Independence Relay Championships turned out to be a two-club show but the Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) played the starring role.
Staged at the National Track and Field Centre yesterday, the PPYC ran away with most of the spoils ahead of the relay teams from the Running Brave Athletic Club, the Hopetown Flames, Rurallites And GDF.
An impressive day across the board saw the well prepared athletes from the PPYC winning nine of the 16 events including all six of the 4x400m relays for the different age groups and genders.
Police dethroned former holders, RBAC who was leading before the marquee 4x400m races by amassing 144 points.
RBAC finished second with 132 points followed by Hopetown Flames (30), Rurallites (20) and GDF (16).
It came down to the last event of the day, the 4x400m men to decide the champions and Winston Dummet’s blistering anchor leg overcame the heroics of Hopetown Flames’ Godwin Humphrey as the PPYC swept the last six events.
With the win, they lifted the coveted
Kenrick Smith Shield and will enjoy a year’s worth of bragging rights as the premier baton passing club in the 592.
The Independence Track and Field celebrations continues today with the 5k/10k races which runs off this morning from 06:00hrs from the GNS ground.
