I was recently asked how to save vegetables planted in the ground when water was building up around the kitchen garden. As I said in last week’s column, the first thing you have to do is make sure you have proper drainage. If not, to save your vegetables, you would have to cut a drain or 2 at the sides so that the excess water can run off easily.
With constant rainfall expected during May and June, if you are planting a vegetable garden, it is advisable that you use raised beds or plant boxes with legs. This method would save you a lot of stress and loss as you can avoid having your seedlings washed away or become waterlogged.
Remember too that heavy rainfall would leach nutrients from the soil so you would have to add them back.
My herb garden is doing very well. It is made up of potted plants which I can move around easily if the water rises. I have Mint, Celery, Parsley, Rosemary, Basil (green and red leaves) and Thyme. I also have several types of mild and hot peppers.
