A security guard attached to Air Services Limited (ASL) is currently in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after he was struck down on Saturday morning while on his way to work.
Ramlackhan Rup, 57, was rushed to the GPH on Saturday morning after he was hit from behind by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle to work. The vehicle was allegedly driven by a soldier
According to information gathered, the accident occurred at Vryheid’s Lust Railway Embankment Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Saturday around 5:15 am. Stabroek News was told that Ramlackhan of 346 8th Street, Martyrs Ville, Mon Repos along with 19-year-old Saif Khan of Success, ECD were riding their bicycles to work when they were hit from behind by the speeding car.
The impact caused Ramlackhan to pitch about 50-60 feet away from the car. Persons who rushed to the scene found Rup in a pool of blood, bleeding from his mouth and nose. The driver who was looking on was urged by the said persons to take Rup to the hospital. They then assisted in placing Ramlackhan into the car after which he was rushed to the hospital.
Ramlackhan’s son, Ray Rup related that they were informed about the accident around 10 that morning and after rushing to the GPH they were informed by a doctor that Rup, who is presently hospitalized at the GPH, is nursing a broken vertebra in the neck, broken nose and a fractured jawbone while the socket of his right eye was severely damaged. As a result of his injuries his face is swollen and he is also reportedly suffering from a brain haemorrhage. He further related that Ramlackhan is unable to speak and breathe through his nose but has regained consciousness and is moving his legs.
Khan, who was riding ahead of Rup was hit by Rup’s bicycle which caused him to fall on the parapet but he sustained only a minor laceration to his right arm. Khan is also an employee of ASL.
Reports indicated that a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and it was discovered that his alcohol intake was above the legal limit. The driver up to yesterday was still in police custody assisting with investigations.
