A labourer who was accused of robbing a policewoman, was yesterday remanded to prison after he denied the allegation.
Jafar Carter, a resident of Haslington, East Coast Demerara denied the charge which stated that on May 25, at Shell Gas Station, located at Regent and King streets, he robbed Shamain Timmerman of a purse valued $5,000, a phone valued $26,000 and $5,000 cash, while being armed with a pair of scissors.
The charge was read by Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to prosecutor Seon Blackman, on the day in question, around 00:10hrs, Timmerman, along with another police officer, were walking along Regent Street in the vicinity of the Guyoil gas station, when Carter ran out from an alleyway and attacked them.
Carter subsequently held on to Timmerman’s partner, but released him before running over to Timmerman, who ran to the Shell Gas Station. According to Blackman, Carter placed the scissors to the victim’s side and took away her purse.
Carter was reportedly arrested one hour later and both police officers positively identified him.
The accused was subsequently remanded and the matter was adjourned until June 19, 2019.
