GFF names team for CONCACAF Gold Cup

The Guyana Football Federation [GFF] has officially revealed their 23-member roster for their maiden appearance at the impending CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States of America [USA].

 The team which comprises six locally-born and based players, also features several unattached [players without a club] overseas born players.

 The squad reads Goalkeepers Alex Murray, Akel Clarke, Quillan Roberts, Defenders Sam Cox, Jordan Dover, Terence Vancooten, Kadell Daniel, Ronayne Marsh-Brown, Matthew Briggs, Kevin Layne, Liam Gordon, Midfielders Neil Danns, Warren Creavalle, Elliot Bonds, Daniel Wilson, Stephen Duke-McKenna, Anthony Jeffrey and Forwards Emery Welshman, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Pernell Schultz, Terell Ondaan, Callum Harriott and Sheldon Holder.

   According to an official release from the GFF, Golden Jaguars Head Coach Michael Johnson said, “The Technical Staff is very confident and excited about the composition of the squad arrived at for the continuation of this historic journey. As you would appreciate, the selection process was not easy by any means and we do appreciate there will be disappointment amongst some players.     However, we would like to encourage players, fans, well-wishers and the media to get behind your Golden Jaguars as we all aim to prove to the people of Guyana, at home and in the Diaspora that we belong. Wherever you are in the world, the staff and players are asking you to get behind the team and enjoy this historical moment. Your country needs you!”

 Similarly, Assistant Coach and former Golden Jaguars International Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, said, “It’s an exciting time for the Golden Jaguars and we are energized to show that we can compete at the highest level in Concacaf. It’s going to be very tough, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

 Guyana is slated to depart local shores tomorrow to commence their training camp in Bermuda and will face-off with the Bermudians, also a tournament debutante, on June 6th in an international friendly.

 They will then travel to Costa Rica to continue the camp from June 9th-13th, with the second international fixture slated for June 11th against Haiti.

 Following the conclusion of camp, Guyana will depart for St. Paul, Minnesota for the opening group-D match against defending champion USA on June 18th.  

 The Golden Jaguars will tackle Panama in their second match-up on June 22nd in Cleveland, Ohio, before concluding their group campaign against traditional rival Trinidad and Tobago on June 26th in Kansas City, Missouri.
