Police in ‘C’ division are investigating the death of a Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara (WBD) labourer, whose partially decomposed body was found outside of his home.
The dead man has been identified as Desmond Mars, called “Bartin”, 56, of Lot 86 Murphy Dam, Goed Intent, WBD. The discovery was made at around 10.40 am yesterday.
Stabroek News learnt that the man’s body was discovered after a friend visited his home and found him lying in a clump of bushes.
A niece explained that her uncle’s friends last saw him on Friday and after they did not hear from him over the weekend, a friend went to check on him. It was at this time that they found Mars’ lifeless body.
“The friend turn back out and was shouting, ‘Bartin dead! Bartin dead!’” she recalled, and added that police were immediately summoned to the scene.
Dexter Watterton, the deceased’s brother who lives in the same yard as he did, told Stabroek News that he only learnt of his demise when he returned home from work yesterday midday.
Watterton told this newspaper that he last saw his brother on Saturday picking mangoes from a tree next to his home. Mars lived in a shack behind Watterton.
“We don’t know what happen to him. He lives behind us and we didn’t hear any strange noise or anything. Also, we don’t see him every day, so it wasn’t strange we didn’t see him yesterday (Sunday),” Watterton related.
Neighbours told Stabroek News that they were smelling an obnoxious scent but believed the scent was coming from a dead animal in the area.
The brother added that they are awaiting results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Police Commander of the division, Edmond Cooper, when contacted yesterday, explained that police are also awaiting the results of the autopsy.
He noted that the body was found swollen without any visible marks of violence.
The body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home.
