A Berbice woman has been reported missing after she was violently taken from a friend’s house in Warren Village, East Berbice, around 1 am on Tuesday.
Dhanmattie Sumara, also known as ‘Jenny,’ was last seen being dragged from her hair out of her friend’s yard by a close male relative was also allegedly beating her with a cutlass.
According to the friend, Sharda Devi Goodhan, the two were involved in a dispute that resulted in the man being held in police custody for some time. Goodhan said the man was released on Monday afternoon, by which time Sumara and her two children had relocated across the road to her (Goodhan’s) house.
She said the man spoke with Sumara on Monday evening and left. However, she added that the heavily intoxicated man, who was armed with a cutlass, returned around 1 am on Tuesday.
According to the woman, the man kicked down her door and “he haul the gal on she hair and broadside she and carry she away.”
Goodhan said she immediately grabbed her children and the couple’s children and rushed over to a neighbour’s house, since she was scared the man would return.
Stabroek News was told that the man’s bicycle was discovered at the head of a street leading into the backlands later on Tuesday morning. However, neither the man nor the woman was located up to yesterday.
According to information gathered from reliable sources by Stabroek News, the man had ventured to the station to report that Sumara had stolen his passport. However, Stabroek News was told that after being requested to visit the station, Sumara informed the ranks that the man had assaulted a minor. The man was arrested and held at the Reliance Police Station, while Sumara was taken to the New Amsterdam Police Station for further questioning.
After the minor was subjected to a medical examination, which found no signs of an assault, the man secured station bail.
According to a source at the New Amsterdam Police Station, ranks are presently “making checks” for the woman. Asked whether there were any reported sightings, the source said that they were told that the woman supposedly returned to the area the following day. However, residents denied this yesterday.
