School of the Nations will be introducing a free year-long youth leadership programme in an effort to counter social issues that have been plaguing the country.
The programme, called Youth Can Move the World (YCMTW), is being offered as part of a collaboration between the school, the ministries of Education and Social Cohesion.
In a statement issued by School of the Nations Director Brian O’Toole, it was explained that due to the fact that the media has been full of reports of crime, drugs, bullying and violence over the past few months, the programme is being introduced in an effort to respond to those challenges.
The programme, which caters for youths aged between 15 and 30, is scheduled to begin on June 15th at 1 pm. It is to be conducted over weekends and during the summer holidays.
The statement said the programme will focus on issues such as cyber bullying, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, literacy, sexual health and gender equity and will make use of the arts, which include drama, dance, art, poetry and songs, to address them.
Additionally, it was also revealed that a key element of the programme will be the study of “Ruhi materials that look at personal and community transformation.”
An arts festival in which competitions will be organised in the areas of music, photography, video, dance, among others, is also planned. It was noted that trophies for the competitions have already been provided by Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company and Republic Bank.
Upon completion of the programme, persons will also be awarded with certificates, the statement added.
It was further disclosed that if the programme proves to be a success, the school will consider introducing the programme in locations outside of Georgetown. Persons interested in additional information can email otoole.nations@gmail.com or call Louisa Mancey at 227-4623.
