Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after they were accused of attempting to murder their ‘drinking buddy’.
Shameer Mathias, 23, and Leonardo Bennett, 20, both miners, were brought before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, who read the charge to them.
It is alleged that the duo, on June 4, at Arangoy Backdam, Cuyuni River, with intent to commit murder, wounded Vicky Williams.
Neither of the men was required to plead to the offence.
Police prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to them being granted bail given the seriousness of the crimes and the likelihood that they may not return to court to attend their trial. In relation to facts surrounding the matter, the prosecutor noted that the defendants and the complainant are known to each other.
She noted that on the day in question, at about 22:00 hrs, the trio were consuming alcohol when an argument ensued. It was then that one of the suspects armed himself with a glass bottle and lashed the complainant, causing him to fall to the ground. The two accused then began to lash the complainant about his body with a wood. Williams was later rushed to the Suddie Hospital and later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital. When arrested, the prosecutor noted that the defendants alleged that they were acting in their own defence.
Both men were later remanded to prison and are set to make their next court appearance before the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on June 26.
