The opening night of the 2019 edition of KFC sponsored Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Senior National Championships got underway last evening at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts with Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, Nicholas Verwey and Regan Pollard walking away as the major winners.
Ince-Carvalhal, who is one of the junior players using the tournament for much-needed match practice ahead of next month’s junior Caribbean championships, moved smoothly during his 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 win over Jonathan Antczak in the men’s category.
Verwey, another junior, got his opening round win over Regan Rodrigues whom he defeated 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 as Adam Alves – a consistent performer over the years – came from a set down to defeat Gianni Carpenter 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4.
In the women’s category, Sarah Lewis recorded an easy win to get her campaign going by taking care of Teija Edwards 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 while Madison Fernandes had a walkover from Tian Edwards.
Meanwhile, the lone match in the veterans over 40 category saw Regan Pollard getting past Robert Fernandes 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 to cap off proceedings on the opening evening.
