The Ministry of Public Health [MOPH] has thrown its support behind the 2nd Annual ExxonMobil Boys and Girls Secondary Schools U14 Football Championship.
The partnership was confirmed at a press conference staged yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue. This year the event will be sponsored under the Chronic Diseases Department.
Petra Co-director Troy Mendonca during brief remarks said, “What we are doing is producing potential leaders because football is a team sport and we are doing this from the U-14 age thanks to our partners”.
Meanwhile, MOPH representative Dr. Kavita Singh said, “We are happy to be onboard with this tournament because we know that physical activity like football and cricket can reduce the cases of several Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD).”
She declared that Hypertension and Diabetes are two examples of diseases that can be controlled through sporting activities. Also, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the MOPH Glendon Fogenay stated that Guyanese need to implement a culture of being more physically active.
The tournament is which also sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited under the Pepsi brand, will start tomorrow with the Boys section. The Girls section will commence on June 22nd.
