—Khalil, Fernandes, Cadogan emerge as second-day leading ladies
The second evening of the 2019 edition of KFC sponsored Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Senior National Championships saw Guyana’s premier players swinging into action at the Georgetown Club Squash Court on Thursday evening.
In the men’s category, title contenders Nyron Joseph, Shomari Wiltshire and Regan Pollard chalked up wins while Taylor Fernandes, Ashley Khalil and Abosaide Cadogan also moved to secure easy first-round wins.
As the script went, Joseph took care of the first-round winner Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, 3-0 while Wiltshire downed Adam Alves 11-3, 11-3, 11-5.
Pollard, who is playing in two categories, took down Michael Alphonso 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 .
Nicholas Narine, Robert Fernandes, and Peter Michael registered the other wins over Javed Ali, Mohryan Baksh, Nicholas Verwey, respectively.
The women’s category on the hand saw top contenders and Pan American selectness Khalil defeating Lydia Fraser 11-2, 11-1, 11- 3 while Taylor Fernandes accounted for her cousin Madison Fernandes 11-2, 11-9, 11-2.
Cadogan and Gabby Fraser were the other winners in that category of the evening, recording straight set wins over Sarah Lewis – 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 – and Kirsten Gomes 11-5, 11-5, 11-0, respectively.
Playing in the vets over 50 category were former senior Caribbean champion, Garfield Wiltshire, who rolled back the years to defeat Medhi Ramdhani 11-3, 11-4, 11-8 while Joe Mekdeci defeated Tony Farnum 11-2, 11-7, 11-7 in the other match played in that category.
