Moments after being recaptured following an escape while they were being brought to a city court, two men were charged with robbing a couple and one of them was sentenced to two-and-half years in jail after he admitted to the crime.
Police say Navin Ally, 24, and Seon Ray, 20, made their escape while they were being brought to court to answer to two joint robbery charges. The pursuit of the duo resulted in shots being fired into the air as officers gave chase.
Ally later stood before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus with a tissue over his nose to prevent blood from dripping to the ground.
When asked what happened to his nose, Ally told the court that he was hit by the police with a gun in front of the city court. Asked by the magistrate how the officer came about hitting him, the accused stated that he did not know.
However, Prosecutor Quinn Harris quickly informed the court that the two accused escaped from custody while they were in front of the court. Ally was later caught at the Kitty bus park, while Ray was caught on Lombard Street.
He also said charges against them related to the escape are pending.
Ally and Ray faced charges which alleged that on June 15th, at Kingston, Georgetown, in the company of another, they robbery Tyrell Chu of two phones, valued $10,000, a $5,000 haversack, a $2,000 portion of perfume.
A second charge against the men stated that they robbed Isham Singh of a $2,500 haversack, a silver chain, valued $10,000, a $35,000 phone and a $5,000 silver ring, along with other items totalling $56,000.
Ally, who was only released from prison last Thursday after spending six months on a marijuana charge, pleaded guilty to the crimes, while Ray denied the charges.
Prosecutor Harris told the court that on the day in question the complainants were having lunch on the seawall behind the Pegasus Hotel, near a construction area. The court heard that the two men would have approached the couple, told them not to move or they would shoot and proceeded to relieve them of the articles mentioned in the charges.
The prosecutor added that after the men fled, the complainants raised an alarm in the hearing of persons at the nearby construction site, a police rank on duty at the Pegasus Hotel and a patrol vehicle. Ally was later apprehended with Singh’s items in his possession, while Ray was found with Chu’s articles.
Ally was subsequently sentenced to two-and-a-half years behind bars on each charge but the sentences are expected to run concurrently.
Ray was remanded to prison until June 24th.
