The extradition proceedings against ex-policeman Shawn Darcy Neblett, officially commenced yesterday, with the testimony of the Treaty Officer at the Ministry of Public Security.
Neblett is wanted in the United States for conspiracy to import cocaine, importation of cocaine, conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Attorney Stacy Goodings, who is representing the interests of the United States, told the court that there were a total of three witnesses prepared to testify, however, only one of those witnesses was able to so.
Ormella Gladstone, a Treaty Officer at the Ministry of Public Security, was the first person to testify in the matter.
Through Gladstone, several documents which she would have received were tendered and marked exhibits. She was then subjected to cross-examination by attorney Darren Wade.
The hearing is set to continue on June 27.
According to the indictment, which was seen by Stabroek News, between August 2015 and September 2015, in the Eastern District of New York, Neblett conspired to smuggle cocaine into the US from Guyana. In August 2015, he is accused of arranging for a courier in Guyana to smuggle cocaine into the US in exchange for US$8,000.
