Ramlackhan Rup, the Air Services Limited (ASL) security guard who was critically injured after he was reportedly struck down by a car driven by a soldier last month, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed that Rup, 57, a father of three of 346 Eight Street, Martyrville, Mon Repos, East Coast Deme-rara (ECD), died around 7.45 pm on Wednesday, at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). He never regained consciousness since the accident.
The accident occurred on May 25th around 5.15 am along the Vryheid’s Lust Railway Embankment Road, ECD, while Rup was riding his bicycle to work.
Stabroek News was previously informed that Rup along with Saif Khan, 19, of Success, ECD, were riding their bicycles to work when they were hit from behind by the speeding car.
Khan, who was riding ahead of Rup, was hit by Rup’s bicycle, which caused him to fall on the parapet but he sustained only a minor laceration to his right arm. Khan is also an employee of ASL.
The impact caused Rup to pitch about 50 to 60 feet away from the car.
Ray Rup, the dead man’s son, had told Stabroek News that the family was informed about the accident around 10 that morning.
He said family members immediately rushed to the hospital, where they were informed by a doctor that Rup, who is presently hospitalised, was nursing a broken vertebra in the neck, a broken nose and a broken jawbone, while the socket of his right eye was severely damaged.
He was also reportedly bleeding in the brain.
Reports indicated that a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and it was discovered that his breath alcohol content was above the legal limit.
The driver was taken into custody but was subsequently released. He is expected to be rearrested soon to face charges.
