Bromeliads were among the blooms on display by Grenada at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The theme was ‘A Carnival of Exotic Tropical Blooms’ and it wowed the judges handing the country its 15th Gold Medal. Grenada has been exhibiting at the show for 21 years.
Grenada’s display was said to be inspired by a carnival float and apart from bromeliads, included heliconias, orchids, ginger lilies, tropical ferns and other foliage as well as scented spices, all of which were grown in Grenada.
Bromeliads are native to the tropical Americas and therefore they thrive in the Caribbean. These low-maintenance plants can be grown both indoors and outdoors and do not require special soil or fancy fertilisers.
Bromeliads have a sort of ‘cup’ at the base which you should pay attention to. You can check once a week to ensure it has clean water, emptying what has stagnated there and removing debris and dead insects. The exotic bloom will make it well worth your while.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
