Joel Bond, the driver of the vehicle assigned to Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine, was released yesterday on $100,000 bail after he was charged with causing the death of Buxton resident Mitford Cambridge following an accident along the Turkeyen Public Road almost two weeks ago.
Bond, 42, a resident of Lot 180 Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is accused of driving motor vehicle PTT 8909 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Cambridge on June 11th at Turkeyen Public Road.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court Two.
Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned until July 31st.
Cambridge, 53, of Lot 11 Section ‘C’ Middle Walk, Buxton, ECD, was the lone person injured around 2.30 pm on June 11th when the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) vehicle crashed into his car and two others parked in the vicinity of MovieTowne.
He succumbed around 2.50 pm the following day at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while receiving medical attention.
Cambridge was said to have been seated in his car, PHH 1846, when the accident occurred.
This newspaper was told that enquiries revealed that at the time of the accident, Bond was proceeding west along the southern side of the public road, allegedly at a fast rate. He reportedly told the police that he fell asleep, resulting in the vehicle hitting the concrete median on the southern side of the road, in front of MovieTowne.
The vehicle then crashed into Cambridge’s car and two other cars—PPP 75 and HC 2695.
The M&CC, in a press statement, had said that Narine was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
At the scene, persons in the area had accused Bond of speeding, while others said that he had fallen asleep.
