Sunday’s conclusion of the 2019 GBTI/GTA lawn tennis tournament saw Gavin Lewis and Afruica Gentle serving their way to championship honours in the male and female Open categories respectively at GBTI’s Lawn Tennis Court and facilities, Bel Air, Georgetown.
Lewis, on Sunday, got the better of Gregoire Vincent 2-1 in an exciting match up.
Vincent won the racquet spin and decided to serve, however, it was the eventual champion Lewis who drew first blood by clinching the first set 6-4.
Vincent struck back in the second set with a dominant display winning 6-1 to level the match before Lewis rallied on the chants of his supporters to the take the final set and his maiden Open title 6-3.
Meanwhile, Gentle on Saturday, dethroned the defending champion Cristy Campbell to take the women’s Open title.
Gentle, who dropped the first set 2-6, stormed her way back to take the next two sets which were closely fought 7-6, 6-4.
Gentle and Lewis were also victors in the mixed doubles final on Saturday by downing Kalyca Fraser and Heimraj Resaul 6-3, 7-6. Earlier in the tournament, Gentle and Campbell won the women’s Open doubles title while Lewis and Daniel Lopes won the men’s Open doubles category, thus making it a hugely successful outing for the Open singles champs.
Winners will receive their awards today at the GBTI facility.
