The saying goes “it takes a village to raise a child,” and that is what the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) exemplified when they decided to support West Indies U15 players Isia Thorne and Rampertab Ramnauth.
The two young men, along with Demerara’s Mavindra Dindyal, are in the regional U15 side which will tour England in August.
The RDC provided each of the young men with a bat following their selection.
During the Regional U15 tournament, Ramnuath finished with the second highest aggregate of the tournament behind tournament Most Valuable Player, Dindyal while Thorne is a promising fast bowler and capable batman.
Dennis Deroop, RDC vice chairman, warned the youngsters not to be complacent.
“I know the awards will be for over a period of one year and you will be recognized for it but today I want to urge you, let us don’t accept it as an achievement that you have done good but don’t get complacent…Especially young people, young athletes when they are rewarded early from time to time become very complacent, I want to urge you to use this to motivate you and work harder to achieve your goals,” he said.
“These two young men have made Berbice very proud by making the West Indies team,” he added.
Deroop advised the players to avoid the lust for fast wealth and to take pride in their trade and making their country proud.
Chairman, David Armogan reminded them that “Cricket is a way of life,” and is part of the culture and pride of the West Indies.
“You have great promise and potential because people have seen in you the class but you have to develop that class and discipline which is the hallmark of success,” Armogan stated.
