An East Ruimveldt man was yesterday remanded by a city magistrate, after pleading not guilty to the possession of 27 grammes of cannabis.
Twenty-six-year-old Dexroy Lewis, of Lot 592 East Ruimveldt, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 5 yesterday, when he was charged with the offence.
Lewis, who was represented by attorney Keoma Griffith, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Griffith told the magistrate that his client was never shown the substance nor was anything ever weighed in Lewis’ presence. He also informed her of unfair treatment his client would have experienced during the time he was arrested, up until yesterday’s date.
Griffith brought to the court’s attention the state his client was in; it was observed that Lewis had a red tinge to the cornea of his eyes and an injury to his right ear. The attorney stated that his client requested medical attention but was never provided such. He also said that Lewis informed him of being physically assaulted while in police custody by an officer.
Police prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail and told the court that on the day of the arrest, police ranks were on patrol and approached Lewis. As they approached him, he took out the bag containing the narcotic and threw it away. The police then searched the vicinity it was thrown in and recovered a bag containing the substance and presented it to Lewis.
Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned until July 3.
