A 31-year-old handyman was remanded to prison yesterday, after he was charged with a series of armed robbery offences during his appearance at a city court.
Cheddie Bacchus, a father of two, denied four counts of armed robbery charges which were read to him by Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that on May 12, at Cemetery Road, Georgetown, while in the company of another and being armed with a knife, he robbed Basil Agard of a cellphone valued $10,000 and a gold chain valued $150,000, and it was also alleged that on the same date and at the same location, while in the company of another and being armed with a knife, he robbed Amit Ferguson of a motorcycle valued $275,000, a phone valued $10,000 and $3,000 cash.
Another charge stated that on June 20, at Princes Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and being armed with a gun, Bacchus robbed Onika Hinds of a gold chain valued $46,000.
The last charge alleges that on the same date and at the same location, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, Bacchus robbed Ashanti Wilson of a phone valued $46,000, a gold chain valued $120,000, and a watch valued $15,000.
Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted to the defendant, citing the prevalence and nature of the offence, along with the fact that a dangerous weapon was used on all four occasions. He noted that Bacchus admitted to the allegations after being cautioned and quoted Wilson as saying, “Me and a friend went with a gun and robbed the girl (Wilson).”
Bacchus was subsequently remanded and was told to return to court on July 3 for his next hearing.
