Later this afternoon, 59-year-old Mahadeo Dasrat will be sentenced for the offence of raping a woman two years ago.
Dasrat was unanimously convicted of the offence by a 12-member mixed jury, following the conclusion of a trial yesterday.
His sentence was, however, deferred to facilitate a victim impact statement from the complainant which is to be read to Justice Brassington Reynolds who presided over the case.
That hearing has been set for 3:30.
On April 11th, 2017, Dasrat sexually penetrated the then 25-year-old woman without her consent.
Following the announcement of the verdict by the jury foreman, Dasrat, when asked if wished to say anything, calmly responded, “I’m very sorry Sir.”
Asked whether he would be requesting a probation report for his client, defence attorney Ravindra Mohabir said he would not.
The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial.
The trial proceedings were held in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court in Georgetown.
