Local Olympians to be honoured during API meet

Local Olympians of today and yesteryear will be honored during a special ceremony at the Aliann Pompey Invitational billed for July 6 at the National Track and Field Centre.

The ceremony will be a collaborative effort involving Pompey, the World Olympians Association (WOA), the Guyana Olympic Association and the National Sport Commission.

According to a release, a number of Guyana’s greats will start to arrive on July 4 for the special awards ceremony that will allow all those that represented Guyana to use the ‘OLY’ title as part of their names.

Meanwhile, Director of Sport Christopher Jones, stated, “We are honoured to give recognition to our past Olympians especially to those that might not have gotten the recognition that they so rightfully deserved especially to the likes of James Wren-Gilkes that we all would agree would have medaled at the 1976 Olympics had it not been for Guyana’s stance at the time.

“But we count it a privilege and honour to give recognition to our athletes that started the process of putting Guyana on the map globally,” Jones mentioned.

Host of the meet, Pompey shared that a ceremony of this nature is important to cultivating a rich sporting culture in Guyana.
