An IAAF World Championships berth, one year’s bragging rights and cash incentives will all be up for grabs this weekend when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) stages its flagship National Senior Championships.
According to President of the association, Aubrey Hutson, athletes will be getting into the blocks at 10:00 hours during the two-day championships as they look to scorch the rubber at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Hutson added that “one of the most looked forward to events on the AAG’s calendar” will attract quite a number of overseas-based Guyanese looking to qualify for the ‘Worlds’ since the meet will be a qualifier. The 17th edition of the IAAF World Championships is scheduled to be held from September 27 to October 6, 2019 in Doha, Qatar.
The AAG official said that in excess of 150 athletes have registered to compete at the fixture which will “have prize money in every event.”
On the local scene, he pointed out that sprinters Akeem Stewart and Davin Fraser will renew their rivalry and will match spikes for the title of fastest man in the 592. Guyana’s 400m record holder, Winston George, will also be in action.
On the distaff side, Alita Moore, Kenisha Phillips, Brianna Charles and Asha Cave will be vying for top honours in the sprint events.
Hutson, along with first Vice President Sheryl Hermonstine and Competitions Director Mayfield Taylor-Trim, also collectively urged fans to attend and show their support for the athletes.
A fund-raising barbeque is also scheduled. Admission to the venue is $300 and sponsors so far include Banks DIH Limited and Bounty Farm Limited. (Emmerson Campbell)
