Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) originated in Southeast Asia and India. There are several varieties depending on the place of origin. The variety of Lemongrass we have in Guyana and the Caribbean is from Southeast Asia.
Lemongrass is a perennial. It grows long, flat reedy leaves and occasionally will have butterfly-like flowers. The leaves tend to be sharp and can cut your skin, similar to paper cuts. This plant can also be grown in pots, but you will need large pots as it is an herb that spreads and can grow tall. You should also leave the pots outside as it thrives in full sun but be sure to place them where they are protected from high winds.
Lemongrass needs rich, well-drained soil and loves composted manure. Even though it loves the sun, you need to water this plant often so that the roots do not dry out.
Gardeners plant lemongrass alongside their flowers and vegetables as it discourages garden pests.
Lemongrass stems are used in various cuisines and the leaves are used to make tea, which we are familiar with in Guyana and the Caribbean. Lemongrass is used in the cosmetic and fragrance industries.
It is worthwhile to have a plant of Lemongrass, it has loads of benefits.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
